Bill Hatswell: A Life of Vision, Heart, and Inspiration

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Bill Hatswell, Founder of Craftsman Collision. Bill was a remarkable man, immigrating from Australia to Vancouver, BC in the 70s, and he built a lasting legacy. A leader with vision, a presence that filled a room, and a sense of humor that could make anyone smile.

Those who worked alongside Bill will remember his unwavering commitment to quality, his belief in doing the right thing, and his giving nature. Bill had a remarkable way of making everyone feel valued. He wasn’t just a boss, he was a mentor, a supporter, and in many ways, a friend. He always asked about people’s families, their well-being, and he genuinely listened.

Bill was exceptionally intelligent, smarter than most with formal education but he never finished high school. That never stopped him from building a successful business empire. He was direct and honest, never afraid to speak his mind, but always guided people through challenges calmly and methodically. Despite his serious approach to business, Bill had a playful and quirky side. He enjoyed Star Trek, loved skiing, squash, and golf. He cared about staying fit, cooking delicious meals, and celebrating Christmas with flair. He also had a sharp eye for detail, he appreciated when people dressed well and would often comment on polished shoes.

Even after decades in Canada, he never lost his Australian accent. His laughter was genuine and memorable, and when it came, everyone knew it was heartfelt. When Bill showed up to the office, he’s excited to be there. He made it a point to greet everyone, ensuring they knew he was available to help or just have a conversation. He took immense pride in Craftsman Collision and in the people who worked there.

Bill pushed everyone to be their best because he believed every detail mattered. Bill was a mentor, a champion of innovation, a believer in doing things right, and a man whose integrity shaped countless careers and lives. He will be deeply missed, yet his legacy is far from over. His three children, Rick, Greg, and Melanie will be taking the reins and continuing the work that meant so much to him. Under their leadership, Craftsman Collision will remain a proudly private, family-owned business. Bill’s vision, values, and spirit will continue to live on through his family, the company he built, and the countless stories that reflect the extraordinary life he led.

At Craftsman Collision, we are more than just a team, we are a family. That family spirit is part of Bill’s legacy, and it’s what will continue to guide us every day.
