Whether you’re golfing, boating or hosting a BBQ with friends, if your summer activities involve alcohol, make sure you plan ahead for a safe ride home.
This summer, ICBC is supporting its police partners in preventing impaired driving with a CounterAttack awareness campaign. The campaign reminds you to plan ahead during summer celebrations and choose a safe way home—call a cab, take transit, or choose a designated driver.
The Importance of Road Safety
Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of traffic accidents and fatalities. This summer, The CounterAttack campaign, spearheaded by law enforcement agencies and community partners, focuses on raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving and the severe consequences it can have. By educating drivers and increasing enforcement, the campaign aims to deter individuals from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
We want everyone to enjoy their summer and have a good time. Here are a few tips to keep our roads safer:
- Being a designated driver is a shared responsibility; take your turn to help get your friends home safely.
- Plan your safe ride home before you start drinking. If you’re going to drink, choose a designated driver before heading out.
- Use other safe options to get home safely: call a taxi, take transit, use a shuttle service, or call a sober friend.
Alternative Forms of Transportation in BC
In an effort to reduce impaired driving, it’s important to consider and promote alternative forms of transportation. Here are several viable options available in the Lower Mainland area:
1. Public Transit
Public transit in BC offers a reliable and convenient alternative to driving. TransLink in Metro Vancouver and BC Transit in other regions provide extensive bus, SkyTrain, and ferry services, making it easy to get around without a car.
2. Ridesharing Services
Ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft are widely available in many parts of BC. These services offer a safe and efficient way to travel, especially for those who need a ride home after consuming alcohol.
3. Cycling
BC is known for its bike-friendly cities and extensive cycling infrastructure. Whether in Vancouver, Victoria, or smaller towns, cycling is a healthy and eco-friendly way to travel. Many cities have dedicated bike lanes and bike-sharing programs.
4. Carpooling
If you’re planning to drink, arranging a ride with a sober friend is a dependable option. Ensuring you have a designated driver before heading out can make all the difference in keeping roads safe.
5. Walking
For shorter distances, walking is not only a healthy option but also a great way to enjoy BC’s beautiful landscapes (especially in the Summer!). Most urban areas have well-maintained sidewalks and pedestrian-friendly zones.
By considering these alternative forms of transportation, we can all contribute to a safer environment and reduce the incidence of impaired driving.
6. Taxi Services
Traditional taxi services remain a reliable option for getting home safely. Taxis are available throughout BC, and many companies now offer convenient app-based booking options, ensuring you can always find a ride.
